My Great-Grandpa Elmer was a farmer in the Alberta prairies. When World War II began in the 1940's Great-Grandpa Elmer went with his brother Oscar to join up to fight. After a medical examination Uncle Oscar was accepted into the army. Grandpa Elmer, however, was not accepted. He had fallen arches, otherwise known as flat feet. Soldiers needed healthy feet to march long distances. Great-Grandpa Elmer felt really badly that he couldn't serve his country. The army enlistment officer made him feel better. He said "We need you here, young man. Soldiers need a lot of food. Someone has to grow the wheat!" So my Great-Grandpa Elmer grew the wheat for the soldiers.
