My name is Min-Ho Kim and today I'm trying to tell the story of my grandfather. It was during World War 2.
From 1939-1945 , Korea was under Japan's control. My grandfather was in Tokyo, Japan studying in a university. He was part of the Independence Movement. He sent a secret message to young Koreans who were in Japan. It said "Dear young men, the only way to survive is to gain independence from Japan! We must fight against them and show them that it is not right to bully us with armed soldiers!"
Unfortunately, Japan heard about the secret message. They arrested my grandfather and tortured him in jail. But, finally, in 1945, Korea became independent because World War 2 was over. My grandfather received a medal from the government. Now he is buried in the National Cemetery. I am proud of my grandfather and respect him. He was a true patriot. In the past, the country that has the most powerful weapons and the largest number of troops was the best. But now it is not so. To be a great patriot you have to be courageous, compassionate, and protest against injustice. ( I think that is the way to be a true patriot.)
