Keegan's Grandpa and Grandma WWII
Tags
This is the little story of Grandpa's war services for Keegan.
Stan joined the Territorial Army in September 1938. They were at a camp when the war started so straight away were drafted into the Army. He was with searchlights and anti-aircraft duties in London during the worst of the bombing. In 1941 was sent to Gibraltar where he spent over 3 years, still on anti-aircraft defence. They used to move the guns around every 3 days or so, so as to fool the enemy into thinking there were more guns than there were. In 1944 grandpa's brother and father were killed in an air-raid in London, so he was sent home and again served with the anti-airplane defence. After a while he was moved to the south coast with the infantray, and spent the rest of the war driving army trucks all over the place. He was demobbed in 1946 after 7 years in the army.
Hi Keegan. This is from Grandma.
Although I wasn't in the forces during the war I was called up when I was l8 in England. First I was put on 'plane spotting - this was night work underground. After about 6 months of this I was sent to the Ministry of Pensions in the north of England, to Blackpool. Because I was a dictaphone typist I was put to type medical reports on the forces who had been disabled in some way. While there, I was loaned to the Americans who had a glass eye distribution centre. I was surrounded by glass eyes - very disconcerting! After a couple of years, I asked to be transferred back to London as my mother was ill. So spent the rest of the war as a typist in the civil service. Our offices were right near Buckinham Palace. At this time we were being bombarded by "doodle bugs" a bomb that flew on its own controlled by wireless. When they stopped humming we knew the bomb would drop somewhere near. Very scarey. Luckily none of family were hurt by these.
